How to Properly Clean and Maintain Your SEM-01 Microphone

Updated: Feb 8

With usage in various situations, any microphone can become a breeding ground for germs and an easy way to spread diseases, including the SEM-01. This is especially true when used outdoors, where dust and germs are prevalent. However, indoor use also carries the risk of germs.

In this regard, we recommend cleaning your microphone regularly or occasionally to ensure your health and that of those around you.

Here are some methods we recommend to keep your SEM-01 microphone in prime and hygienic condition. Emphasizing the importance of hand hygiene, the first step is:

1.Wash your hands before using the SEM-01 microphone.

Wash Your Hands, cleanliness begins with ourselves, so make it a habit to wash your hands before using the SEM-01 microphone. This prevents germs from your hands from transferring to the microphone.

2. Clean the housing & XLR connector.

Housing & XLR Connector, alcohol is known as a disinfectant, so use alcohol (at least 70%) to clean the housing and XLR connector. Use a soft cloth soaked in alcohol to clean the housing, gently rubbing. Alternatively, you can use wet tissues available in convenience stores. For cleaning the XLR connector (gold plated), use cotton buds soaked in alcohol.

3. Clean the cable.

Clean the cable, cleaning the cable with alcohol is risky. An alternative is to use wet tissues or hand sanitizer, or coconut oil, which is also known for its disinfectant properties. Apply a small amount of coconut oil to the cable, then use a soft cloth to spread it evenly and gently rub.

4. Clean the windshield.

Windshield, before cleaning the windshield, detach it from the electret capsule. The next step is to soak the windshield in warm soapy water (any soap will do), gently stir, then rinse and let it dry.

5. Clean the electret capsule.

Be careful when cleaning this part, as it is sensitive and the most vulnerable. Use wet tissues (preferably alcohol/isopropyl/isopropanol-based) and clean it slowly.

6. Sun-dry it

After completing all the steps above, it's a good idea to sun-dry the SEM-01 microphone for approximately 30 minutes to eliminate any remaining stubborn germs.

Well, easy, right?

Maintaining the cleanliness of our equipment is a good step to minimize the spread of germs and diseases. So, let's always prioritize cleanliness.
