Lokananta, in collaboration with Art Music Today Yogyakarta and supported by Seruniaudio and Lokonaudio, successfully held a Spatial Music Concert featuring Echoes of The Displaced (Thelonious Hamel & Jenny Szabo), and Wahyu Thoyyib Pambayun along with Gamelan Kalatidha. This event took place at the legendary Lokananta studio in Surakarta on June 24, 2025, as part of the Lokananta Studio Gigs program.
Spatial Music Concert at Lokananta
The sound system for this event utilizes an object-based spatialization concept that was built from the ground up and developed by the Lokonaudio laboratory. In this concert, Lokonaudio implemented an installation of 12 spatial independent channel speakers along with an extended subwoofer. The 12 speakers are arranged in a circular formation surrounding the audience, allowing the entire audience to enjoy the sound spectrum in an open and dynamic manner.
“The concept of this concert and sound system allows us as gamelan players to enjoy the pure, organic sound of the gamelan ensemble. It feels as if there is no amplification. This is the first experience for us at Gamelan Kalatidha, and honestly, it has long been a dream to perform a work with this spatial system,” said Wahyu Thoyyib Pambayun.

Echoes of The Displaced (Thelonious Hamel & Jenny Szabo) presents electro-acoustic music with body movement. Thelonious Hamel and Jenny Szabo state that space is an important aspect of their work. “For us, space is an instrument just like a musical instrument or a computer.
This understanding becomes very complex, as we respond to space as something alive and dynamic. For example, when I process the feedback produced by the clarinet, both spontaneously/improvisationally and in a pre-conceived manner, the condition of the space and the system designed to transmit sound to the audience becomes vital. But Lokonaudio successfully realized the artistic goals of our work. It feels like we are dreaming,” said Thelonious and Jenny Szabo.
“This performance is a rare phenomenon, as it is the first time it has been held in Solo, and we are very happy because the entire audience was able to enjoy this presentation, and it was clear that they were very impressed. I believe that the approximately 50 audience members present at this concert were able to refresh their listening experience,” said Erie Setiawan, the production manager of this concert.
